Resume writing tips

Formatting – think about the role you are applying for and what is most important. If someone is going to skim over this resume super quickly – is your experience obvious, and will they be able to determine your suitability to the role quickly? For a graduate role, include education on the first page of the resume, followed by employment history and volunteer/work experience. Other tips on general formatting is just to ensure that sections don’t run over multiple pages, for example if a sentence continues from one page to another, try re-formatting so the sentence finishes on the same page.

Tailor resume to the role – don’t be afraid to include key words from the job description, it is there as a guide for you to tailor your resume to. (little tip with this – big companies will often run applications through a system that filters for key words and only applications with key words from the job description will actually make it through to be looked at by the hiring team).

Condense information (be clear and concise) – make sure that where you write sentences or add information, that it is important to the role. For example, if the role is related to a specific placement experience (social media, membership, events, etc) you have completed throughout the year, add more detail about this!
